INNER~VIEWS : SILVIA HERRASTI
Born and raised in Mexico City up to the age of 16, Silvia has lived in different places in Mexico and abroad. She grew up in a family-oriented environment, where travel and exploring different cultures were always a priority. Going to markets wherever they visited opened her curiosity of handmade, utilitarian and decorative objects. Through her travels and studies, Silvia became more conscious of the beauty, diversity, and uniqueness of every culture. It also made her love and appreciation grow for her Mexican heritage.
Silvia is a multi-disciplinary artist. She has an upcoming exhibit in Oaxaca at No Nada Galería, from February 17th to March 30th, 2024. She also owns the shop KŪN, which is a must-visit in Oaxaca Centro. Silvia works with artisans throughout Mexico and sources unique antique and vintage home goods.
Can you give a bit of a backstory on how you got to where you are today?
I studied and worked in the hospitality industry for years (hotel + food and beverage). In my twenties, I had an event happen that made me question what I really wanted to do in life. I decided to change gears and move toward the decor area, mainly focusing on Mexican handcrafts. Having always been drawn towards the arts in general, I opened my first store in San Miguel de Allende, where I was living at the time. Some years ago, I lived in California, and began studying art there, which led to the start of my art creation.
I met you after coming into your shop in Oaxaca. How did you come to work with artisans?
Through the different stores I had, I would come into contact with amazing artisans. Also by traveling throughout Mexico, going to artisan fairs, and sometimes just by chance! I believe people meet when they are meant to, and as for objects, they find you as well.
Your style is so cool - folksy, mystical, antiques mixed with contemporary - what influences what you're drawn to?
Art is a huge influence. Julie Mehretu, Sarah Sze, El Anatsui, just to mention a few artists that I particularly admire. I also continue to be influenced by all kinds of markets and admire how everyday, colorful things are exhibited just because. Architecture and interior design are a big inspiration, as well. I believe in the notion of being surrounded by objects and colors that personally inspire each individual, no matter how simple, as a huge part of our well-being.
I recently learned what an incredible artist you are yourself! I love what you're working on. Can you tell us about the upcoming show you are having and what inspires your work?
I have an exhibit coming up on February 17th at the No Nada Gallery, in Oaxaca City, where I will be showing mixed media pieces: painting, collage, embroidery, photography, and an installation.
The main inspiration of my work is the enigma of life itself. For this particular exhibit, it is the unceasing journey to get to know oneself - through questioning, through experience, through joy and hurt, through observation, through embracing unease. But also through enjoyment, leisurely & unhurried, with complete trust in the universe.
You have traveled a lot, within Mexico and internationally. Where are some of your favorite places? What do you seek out when in a new place?
I have been falling in love with Mexico all over again, and I am grateful to be able to explore more of it. There is such richness and diversity, in all aspects. India has also been a huge inspiration in my life.
I love a place full of traditions and folklore, translated into the culture´s utilitarian design, and seek to be able to interact with local people, as much as possible.
What's your ideal day look like?
In my daily life: First, taking the time for meditation and cooking a simple meal in the morning. Then, working on some of my pieces, or going on a day trip to a local community for handcrafts for the store. Lastly, working a bit at the store, and going for a stroll downtown or meeting up with a friend for a drink or meal.
Elsewhere: Meditation, simple meal, and exploring the local flea and other markets!
Prayer for the world?
My prayer for the world is that we all find more empathy within ourselves, understanding that every human soul seeks shelter, love and peace.
